Hello,
I've seen this mentioned a lot with reputable breeders; they say they will take a dog back if your circumstances change and you can't keep it for whatever reason. Also, when we see posts where someone is saying their dog isn't what they were hoping for or posts where someone is looking to sell their young dog, there is always a few comments such as "have you contacted your breeder?"
Just curious what the etiquette is here? If the dog is still young does the breeder (assuming they are the type that will take a pup back) usually give a person his money back? Or does the breeder take the dog back for free?
For the breeders on here that this has come up, how did the person approach you and how did you feel about the situation? I personally would feel ashamed for returning a pup, so I'm wondering if you as the breeder look down or judge those that end up not keeping them?
Please help.
I didn't find the right solution from the internet.

just my opinion from my experience from being involved in the dog game 40 years ago in so calif. , the situation would depend on why you couldn't or wouldn't keep the dog ? , and how long did you have the dog ? serious health issues with a new pup should be understood by any breeder and you should get reimbursed , or a replacement if it is proven (vet checked blood tests etc ) sick when you get it . but behavior is a chance the buyer takes . if i returned one for behavior , i would not expect a refund , i would be relieved they would take it off my hands . now if you lose your house , job etc and cant keep it , that also should be your issues , not the breeder , so dont expect any $ , unless they arrange to sell it for you . i would never look down on someone for having the common sense to take a dog back if they could not care for it or handle it . for them to put the dog in the wrong hands would make the breeder look bad. that's just my opinion . ted
